[RESOLVED] Error : "550 requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable"

If you are getting the error “550 requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable” while sending the mails then it may be possible that mail recipient is not found. For example you are sending the email on [email protected] but mail services are not able to locate the mail address. We already know about 5XX error, if the server (mail server) tries to send mail to a no-existence user then this error generated. Let’s know more about the reasons behind this error:

Why we are getting this error ?

If you are using plesk panel and getting error “550 requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable” then there are some reasons like :

1. If your email account is pointed to other mail servers like Gmail, but still the domain mail services enabled for local server, then you can get this error. While using other mail server for your domain then you have to enabled “Remote server” for Email routing.

2. It may also possible that the receiver’s mailbox is disabled or Plesk is not working properly due to some reasons. In this condition you can get this error while sending emails.

Warning: Unable to send notification: mail() failed: mail() [function.mail]: SMTP server response: 550Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable or not local

NOTE: It may be possible that email account is disabled on plesk or hosted somewhere else. So first check the email account in your plesk panel.

How to overcome from this error ?

You can resolve above error from these easy steps. You have to check first that which mail server you are using or check MX records.

1. If you are using different mail server like Gmail then you have to disable the mail services by following the steps :
  • Login to plesk.
  • Click on Domains >> Mail >> Disable Mail.
2. If your domain is pointing to local server and yo are still getting this error then you have to check for the email account is not disabled. If it is then you have to enable it by :
  • Login to plesk.
  • Click on Domains >> Mail >> enable Mail.
